In my more than 30 years in business, I’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t, especially in marketing. And one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that more often than not, big complex problems have very simple solutions. And when it comes to marketing, be it in business, civic or personal efforts, this ONE THING can be the sole difference between success and failure.

The term ‘marketing’ refers to the act of making someone aware of you, your beliefs, your ideas, etc. And the thing is, we all do it every single day. Hence, it applies to more than just a business. While in the midst of business, it means to get your ideas out into the world, in a personal sense, it means the same thing. It’s simply that people don’t stop to think about how it applies to them or about how much it can help them.

We all have something we’re passionate about. In our particular business, it’s bringing a message of health, hope and opportunity to the world. In a popular fast food chain, it could be entertaining kids with the best-priced take out. In a large retail store, the passion might be about dressing teens in the ‘coolest’ clothes. Let’s look at a couple of other examples and then I’ll make a point that will mean the difference in success or failure, keeping weight off or regaining it, being happy or being miserable.

Churches have a marketing message too. Some are a little different than others, but if you read the Bible you’ll find it’s that God’s grace and mercy cover all sins. The Church wants people to realize how crazy God is about them and come to know Him more, and realize they don’t have to be alone. Whether it’s Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or the Boys and Girls Clubs, they all have a message too. They all want everyone else to know they are wholesome, high integrity, strong moral organizations that shape and mold young people, giving them hope and a system to follow in achieving their goals.

Now, what about individuals? Some people market their message well, some don’t. Too often, unfortunately, the ones who market their message the best are the ones whose message is a negative one. What about you?

What do you passionately believe? Not sure. Ask yourself this question. “What do I talk about, think about, charge on my charge cards and write most of my checks for? That’s your passion. I’ve heard it told that we can discover very quickly what we care about most by looking at our charge card statement or check book register. You see, what we invest our time and money most on tells a lot about us. We can also tell this by checking in with our thinking. What do you wake up thinking about, spend your day pondering and even go to sleep with on your mind? This also is a tell-tale sign of what truly matters to you.

Some are elated at the idea of attaining goals and celebrate each step of achievement. They cause the rest of the world to realize there is hope. Some wallow in self-pity over not having enough. They ooze discontent and hopelessness all over others. The interesting thing is that each of these messages could occur in the lives of two people living through the same exact thing. One chooses to see what she (or he) has while the other plays the role of the victim and sees (not mention shares with others) all that they don’t have. The point to get is that they’re both living the same life, but sharing two very different marketing messages.

One church might truly want the world to know that God adores them, but never markets that message. Instead they focus on how tough it is to live in the world and how we must constantly ‘fight the fight’. A fast food restaurant might want the world to know they’re the place to bring your children for a quick meal, but instead send the message that fried food is fun food. Are you beginning to see where I’m coming from? We all have a marketing message. Are you sending the one that will serve your goals in the best way?

We all have a marketing message. We all tell the world around us what’s going on with us, what matters to us and what we’re focused on. When the church comes across something that reinforces their message they put it on the sign in front of the building. It might say something like, “If God had a refrigerator your picture would be on it. He’s CRAZY about you, you know!” When we saw messages like this week after week, we’d begin to know what the ideas were inside the building. When the fast food chain decides that healthy eating for kids is important they begin to create choices in kids’ meals, offering fruit and milk and granola bars. They show pictures of their mascot eating fruit and exercising. When we encounter their message, we notice, at least subliminally.

In our company, each time we come up with a new program or offer, we should be telling the world! We need to have a system in place with our signage, phone script and conversations with members to relay what this weeks’s lesson in Life Success was that so touched us, or how Never-Ending Motivation came to our rescue this past week, or how the Fit Quick or 12/20 Miracle program (or whatever the new promotion is) is shaping our body so fast we can barely believe it!!! Our enthusiasm is contagious, as is our apathy. Which one are you spreading?

We each send a marketing message. Whether we consciously choose to or not, whether we believe we are or not, we are. And since we all know how crucial the Law of Attraction and Surroundings and Social Influence are to our success in life, weight loss and business we need to be touting to our surroundings the newest and most exciting idea that’s worked. Tell the world around you what you’re learning. You’ll be 100% more likely to keep repeating the behavior just because you did this. Don’t just send a message you’re not even aware you’re sending, one that’s got grumpiness, discontent and misery at its root. Choose to thrillingly share with those around you what you’ve learned that day and what you’re achieving. Tell your friends and family why you’re excited about your new lifestyle and how great you feel! Tell the world how fantastic your life is becoming and how you CAN’T WAIT until tomorrow to see how much better things get!

Market your marketing message. Tell people about the great and exciting things that are going on around you!
