It’s interesting to me how far too many people don’t invest any time in continued learning.  It could be referring to reading books, listening to tapes, watching videos, attending meetings and/or seminars, taking a course, attending a specific training, or more.

Oh sure, if it’s something we really love and are interested in, we’ll do it.  Some of us love what worshiping God brings to our lives, so we study the Bible.  Some of us want to learn how to invest, so we study that.  Others of us want our marriages and families to be stronger, so we study accordingly.  And, of course, many of us love health and fitness, so we invest time in reading and learning about that.  While these items are vital to living well, and need time given to them, they are not enough if you are a businessperson.

What’s a businessperson?  Glad you asked!  A businessperson is one who engages in the operation of a business in some capacity and sees that capacity as the vehicle that can be used in the attainment of one or more of their dreams.  A businessperson comes into the business with hopes and dreams.  They work because they have plans.  They know that constant learning and putting forth a strong work ethic will result in moving forward financially, mentally, in career and in confidence.  This person takes seriously the fact that all businesses are teams and all teams have numerous absolutely required positions.  A businessperson appreciates that all businesses are sales businesses.  They don’t try to fight it; they know it and plan for it.  A businessperson embraces the fact that without taking care of customers, the goal will never be achieved, hence service and product knowledge (NOT the same thing) are mandatory.  A business person knows and acts on the fact that marketing is key to any business’s success and therefore must be planned and followed through on at all times.  Finally a businessperson understands that business is just that… business.  And that a strong, at least basic, working knowledge of business should be practiced; all parts from hiring correctly to keeping a tight hold on inventory, from accurate statistical reporting systems to good staff evaluation systems, from strong, duplicable training to an annual budget, from a strategic marketing plan to knowing exactly who your competition is and MORE!  A businessperson not only comprehends all the above, but also takes TOTAL responsibility for their specific role in the business.  That takes me back to my original observation.

Far too many people don’t invest any time in continual learning.  We’ve already established that you’ll learn about what you love, but what about what you ought to love?  I’m referring to the thing that will make your dream come true?  You know… business!  If you’re a business owner or manager, are you studying the components that make up a healthy business and learning to improve those areas in your business?  If you’re a coach or PT are you studying better ways of connecting with your member and more tidbits you can give them?  If you’re in sales, are you regularly practicing the learning of a better marketing skills and a stronger sales presentation?

I’ve personally discovered that continual learning IN THE AREA RELEVANT TO MY BUSINESS SUCCESS, therefore my life’s success, is the KEY to me attaining my goals and dreams.  While you can AND SHOULD study the part of the business that we love, we must also study the part we need.  Executives tell me this is ‘executive level thinking’.  They tell me not everyone will do it.  Note that didn’t say ‘not everyone can do it’.  It said not everyone will do it.  The question today is, “Will you?”  Will you identify the position you hold and learn what needs to be learned in order for you to succeed?
